Steps of Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
- The surgeon will design the ear structure and mark the areas that need to be operated on.
- Local anesthesia will be applied to the ear area. In younger patients, general anesthesia may be used.
- Once the anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon will make a small incision behind the ear, in the natural fold, to hide the scar.
- A portion of the ear tissue may be removed, and the cartilage will be shaped to create a more natural curve toward the head.
- The ear will then be pulled closer to the head, and the incision will be closed using hidden stitching techniques.
Preparing for Ear Surgery
- Consult with a doctor to evaluate the problem and plan the most appropriate approach for the patient’s ear shape.
- Ensure a thorough health check-up and inform the medical team of any pre-existing conditions or allergies, especially to medications.
- Refrain from smoking and avoid medications or vitamins that can affect blood clotting (such as Aspirin, Vitamin D, Vitamin E) at least 7–14 days before the surgery.
- Do not wear contact lenses or makeup on the day of surgery.
Post-Surgery Care
- After the surgery, you will need to wear a face support band around the ear area for at least 2 weeks.
- Avoid getting the surgical area wet for at least 3 days after the surgery.
- Refrain from exercising or any activity that could impact the head or ears for at least 2 weeks.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking until the wounds heal completely, typically at least 4 weeks post-surgery.
- If you experience any unusual bleeding after surgery, contact the doctor immediately for follow-up care.
