Freckles are dark spots that appear on the skin, typically brown in color and small in size. They most commonly occur on the face, neck, and arms, and are more noticeable in people with fair skin. Freckles can appear from childhood and may become larger and darker as a person grows older, showing a progression in intensity with age.
The process that causes freckles is similar to that of melasma: an overproduction or malfunction of melanin pigments, leading to darker skin in certain areas. The main causes of this abnormal melanin activity are usually genetics and sun exposure.

Methods to Treat Melasma and Freckles on the Face:
- Apply sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with at least SPF30 PA+++.
- Exfoliate the skin using herbs and fruit-derived AHAs. AHAs help remove dead skin cells and reduce melanin pigment, which can fade freckles and melasma.
- Use aloe vera gel. Peel the aloe vera, apply the gel on your face daily for 6–7 weeks. It helps brighten the skin and reduce dark spots and wrinkles.
- Lemon and tomato: Blend tomato and mix with lemon juice. Apply to the affected area for about 5 minutes, then rinse. Repeat daily for visible fading of freckles and melasma.
- Red onion: Slice the onion and place directly on the freckled area. Leave for 15–20 minutes and rinse. Regular use helps lighten freckles over time.
- Radish: Peel and slice radish, blend with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, apply to the face for 15 minutes, then rinse off. Use three times a week for effective fading of dark spots.
- Laser treatment: This method uses light waves that penetrate deep into the skin to stimulate repair and speed up skin cell turnover, helping reduce pigmentation.
- Facial treatments: These can help reduce freckles more quickly and also strengthen the skin.
