Drooping Eyelids or Ptosis occurs when the muscles of the eyelids become weak, causing the upper eyelid to sag or droop. This condition is often due to the skin losing its elasticity, leading to the upper eyelid hanging down and possibly obstructing the field of vision. As people age, the skin around the eyes naturally loses collagen and elasticity, making ptosis more common. In some cases, this condition can even interfere with vision, as the sagging eyelid may partially cover the eye.
For many individuals, ptosis is a cosmetic concern, but if it affects vision, corrective surgery may be necessary to improve both appearance and functionality.
Steps to correct drooping eyes
For eyelid muscles that are still functional or for cases where only one side is affected, the doctor will inject local anesthesia around the upper eyelid. The procedure is similar to double eyelid surgery, where an incision is made to access the muscle. The muscle is then tightened by shortening it, helping to lift the eyelid. In cases where the muscle is severely weakened, a tendon may be used to help connect the forehead with the eyelid to support its function.
After surgery, swelling typically subsides within 1-2 months, and muscle movement returns to normal. This results in a more youthful appearance with wider eyes and clearer eyelid folds.
Surgery time
The surgery for eyelid correction typically takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour. Local anesthesia and short-acting general anesthesia are used during the procedure. Afterward, the patient will be monitored at the clinic as per the doctor’s instructions, and the stitches will be removed about 1 week after the surgery. Patients can resume their daily activities normally approximately 3-4 days after the surgery.
How to take care of yourself after ptosis correction
- Avoid getting the wound wet, and do not wash your face until the third day after surgery.
- Take the prescribed medication and apply the ointment to the eyelid as directed by the doctor.
- Avoid spicy foods and fermented items.
- Refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking.
- After stitch removal, apply scar treatment ointment on the incision.
- If there is bruising, warm compresses can be used.
- Makeup can be applied after the stitches are removed, but avoid using makeup removers that are difficult to clean around the eyes.
- Avoid rubbing the eyes harshly to prevent the wound from reopening.
- The eyelid shape will settle and stabilize after about 2-3 months.
