Everyone dreams of having a slim, well-shaped, beautiful nose that complements their face. However, for those with a large or prominent nose, or even after undergoing nose wing surgery, if the nose still appears large and out of balance with the face, the cause may be due to various structural factors such as the base of the nose, bone structure, cartilage at the tip, and underlying tissues like fat and collagen. Some people may not realize that when they undergo rhinoplasty, it could lead to a larger nose as the nasal base extends, although it might appear slimmer due to changes in proportions between the base and the height of the silicone implant. To address this issue, a nose base osteotomy or bone reshaping procedure might be necessary.
Nose Base Osteotomy
Nose base osteotomy (also known as bone reshaping or bone narrowing) is performed to make the nasal base narrower by separating the bones from the base and compressing them to narrow the base. This technique does not affect the upper or inner parts of the nose. The degree to which the bones can be narrowed depends on the thickness of the bones in each individual. After surgery, you may need to stop the bleeding in the nose and wear a nasal splint. There will be a small incision (2mm) inside the nostril. Bone reshaping typically results in more swelling and bruising compared to traditional rhinoplasty due to the movement of the bones and bleeding. This procedure is popular in South Korea and has become increasingly common in Thailand as well. The results are often worth it, as it gives the nose a slimmer and more beautiful shape, helping patients forget their old nose.
Nose Wing Adjustment
For those with problems like flared nostrils, a wide nose, or large nostrils that appear unappealing, surgery can help resolve this issue. Nose wing surgery can correct this by reducing the size of the nostrils. We use a special technique that ensures no visible scarring once the wound has healed. Before performing the surgery, the doctor will determine the ideal size for the nostrils, considering the overall facial structure and the base of the nose. After healing, your nose will look more refined and harmonized with your facial features.
Surgery Duration
Rhinoplasty is a relatively quick procedure, typically taking about one hour. It is safe and performed by experienced surgeons using modern techniques, which ensure a beautiful and natural nose that fits well with your face. Before surgery, it is important to refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 2 weeks to reduce the risk of infection and prolonged swelling. Make sure to inform your doctor about any allergies or chronic conditions.
Post-Surgery Care for Rhinoplasty
- First 48 hours: Apply cold compresses using a gel pack to the eyes and nose bridge.
- Sleep with your head elevated for the first 3 days to reduce swelling and get sufficient rest.
- Avoid sleeping on your side to prevent the nose from shifting or becoming asymmetrical.
- Refrain from consuming alcohol and smoking.
- Avoid spicy foods and fermented foods.
- Drink water from the centella (gotu kola) and coconut water to reduce swelling and bruising.
- Use a gentle soap to wash your face starting on day 4.
- Apply warm compresses on bruises starting from day 6.
- Avoid strenuous activities, including exercise or heavy lifting.
- Take the prescribed medication as directed by your doctor.
